My name is Helena and I am writing this email because, as an ex-patient I think it is a great idea, for a person who is fighting against this disease to know that he/she could be another winner.
I am 26 and in August 2002 I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. Everything that was normal in my life up to that point changed completely. There were really hard moments both for me and my family: doubts, fears, and the search for the prompt solution. Of course a quick solution doesn't exist, as at least for a whole year I was in and out of the hospital all the time, and this is still similar now, but to a lesser extent.
I have to say I was lucky as I haven't received a transplant, and I have four sisters, three of them are compatible with me and the other one is my twin. They are my stars, my guardian angels, because even though it has not been necessary, it is a security that not many people have. So, lucky is the best word that goes with my name, because in this unlucky situation I have been a winner.
My plans? HAHA, having a mortgage. A mortgage is something that worries everybody nowadays, but they are not really aware it can magnify your life.
My plans are really simple; the same ones that people do without paying attention: buying a house, getting married, starting a family, working... the day-to-day is a great experience for me.
I think that people who go through these experiences, are never again as they were before, they live more plentiful lives, they value things more, they are stronger, at least, this is how I am
Lots of luck and cheer up!"
