José Carreras joins the European efforts against cancer

Carreras says: "our most lasting partner is the knowledge derived from scientific research to have in-depth knowledge of the molecular base of cancer"

Barcelona, Monday September 28th 2009

José Carreras will take part in the European Partnership for Action Against Cancer, a meeting which will be celebrated the 29th of September in Brussels. Being unable to attend due to professional engagements, José Carreras will participate through audiovisual media. The meeting will count with the European Comission President, Mr. José Manuel Barroso, Her Majesty, Princess Mathilde of Belgium and the European Health Comissioner, Mrs. Androulla Vassiliou.

The European Union aims to reinforce its long-term commitment in the fight against cancer through the organisation European Partnership for Action Against Cancer. The overall aim of the Partnership is to support Member States and other stakeholders in their efforts to tackle cancer more efficiently by providing a framework for identifying and sharing information, capacity and expertise in cancer prevention and control.

This meeting represents a great challenge in establishing common efforts to fight against this illness. It will also help to better organize: avoid scattered actions and duplication of efforts, and contribute to a better use of the limited resources available. It is also a space to exchange ideas and establish alliances in the fight against cancer. Among others, the goal is to emphasize cancer prevention, prioritize scientific research and date exchange among countries.

Referring this meeting, José Carreras comments: "Fight, chance, family, affection, warmth, hope, trust...are great allies to fight against this illness. But, our most lasting ally is the knowledge that stems from scientific research to know in depth the mollecular base of cancer.

Cancer is not a Spanish, Belgian, French or European reality. It is a human reality. It concerns all of us as human beings. Hence, the term chosen to designate this project is particularly appropriate: Partnership."
