THANKS TO ALL!!
Mercedes in very good company
"Hello, my name is Mercedes and I am 55 years old thanks to God and the bone marrow transplant I received two and a half years ago. My story is that, quite unexpectedly, I was diagnosed with an acute leukaemia. Needless to say that the shock for my family and me was tremendous. However, we had to face up to reality and "we" set out to overcome it. The treatment, as many of you well know, is painful and tough for everyone but thanks to the full cooperation of doctors and nurses of the Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona, we managed to overcome the bad times. All we needed was to find a donor since I was not compatible with any of my siblings.
A few months later, I had a compatible bone marrow donor, as far we were concerned he was an angel, our hero! We went through the test successfully, never forgetting how scared we were and how we suffered. This time our magnificent collaborators were the doctors and nurses from the "Germans Trias i Pujol" Hospital in Barcelona. In their "bubbles", they helped us to overcome this new phase. I always talk in the plural because it was not only me who suffered and had to endure the whole process, there was the family, husband, children, mother, brothers and sisters and friends who were also participants.
Now I am happy. I lead a completely normal life. I have no after-effects, I take no medication, I can travel, do sport, etc... I now feel more alive than ever because I appreciate much more how wonderful it is to LIVE!
One has to fight a lot, tackle the disease, but it is really worthwhile.
The José Carreras Foundation, together with the bone marrow donors, make it possible for people like me to tell of their "experiences". My thanks to all of you!!
To all of you who are fighting right now, receive a warm embrace and keep your spirits up!"
