The scientific journal Oncotarget has just published an article by some of our colleagues at the IJC, amongst them Ruth Risueño, Jordi Esteve, Amaia Etxabe and Meritxell Nomdedeu. The article concerns the efficacy of a drug called Emetine in the treatment of acute myeloid leukaemia. +INFO
The Stem Cell, Mesenquimal Cancer and Development Research Group at the University of Barcelona Hospital Clínic Campus (Hospital Clínic-UB Campus) has, for the first time, described the immunophenotypic analysis and quantification of hematopoietic cells during human fetal development
Dr. Clara Bueno, together with other members of the Stem Cell, Mesenquimal Cancer and Development Research Group at the Hospital Clínic-UB Campus (Alejandra Sanjuan-Pla, Álvaro Muñoz-López and Pablo Menéndez) have led a study, published in the journal Leukemia, describing for the first timethe generation of B1 lymphocytes during blood development. B1 lymphocytes are the "great unknown" and, in addition to playing a significant role in infections, have been associated with leukaemia. + INFO
The EHA publishes the European hematology roadmap for the years 2016-2020
La European Hematology Association (EHA) has drawn up a consensus document laying out the roadmap for European hematology research for the coming years. Sixteen Spanish researchers have participated in this task of whom Dr. Mayka Sánchez, Dr. Tomàs Navarro, Dr. Pablo Menéndez and Dr. Jordi Sierra form part of the IJC. + INFO
Pesticides and infant and childhood leukaemia
At the request of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences Dr. Pablo Menéndez's team at the Hospital Clínic-UB Campus has just finished a study of the links between pesticides and infant and childhood leukaemia. The study examines the available experimental and epidemiological evidence linking exposure to pesticides and infantile leukaemia and provides a basis to support such a link, which could take place in the uterus. + INFO
Applied cytogenetic course on MDS and AML for Latin American colleagues
The Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) in Barcelona is organising a theoretical course on the treatment for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) or acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). A group of 10-15 Latin American experts in hematology and pathology will participate in further courses on cytogenetic protocols for MDS and LMA at the IJC's Catalan Institute for Oncology/Germans Trias i Pujol Campus at the ICO-GTiP Hospital's cytogenetic laboratory. Notable aspects of these courses are the cytogenetic techniques employed, sample circuits, the application of in situ hybridisation (FISH) and microarrays. The courses are being organised in part by Dr. Francesc Solé and Dr. Isabel Granada and will be held on Wednesday 13 April. You can consult the programme here.
Symposium on acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) at the IJC Catalan Institute for Oncology/Germans Trias i Pujol Campus (ICO-GTiP Campus)
On 14 and 15 April Dr. Josep Mª Ribera will lead a symposium on the latest advances being made to combat acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The symposium will be held at the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute ICO-GTiP Campus. We invite you to particpate and you can consult the programme here.
Interview with Cristina Prieto
We have interviewed Cristina Prieto, a member of the Stem Cell, Mesenquimal Cancer and Development Research Group at the Hospital Clínic-UB Campus. Don't miss the interview! You can read it here.
Sharing experiences through visits and conferences
On 8 March Dr. Rafael Béjar came to give a talk at the IJC's ICO-GTiP Campus about research taking place into myelodysplastic syndromes. Some days later, on 21 March, Dr. Manel Juan, from the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona also took part in a conference about a project he is involved in concerning CART19. We took advantage of the visits by these experts to interview them.

The 2015 REDMO Report is now out!
We want to share the annual Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO) Report with you. In 2015 a total of 36,389 people registered with REDMO, bringing the total number of available bone marrow donors in our country to 200,678. During the course of the year a total of 450 hematopoietic progenitor transplants from non-related donors were performed in Spain, the donors having been found by REDMO. Of these 75 were bone marrow transplants, 314 were of peripheral blood and 61 of umbilical cord blood units. Click here for much more information about REDMO.
The Spanish Group for Hematopoietic Stem-cell Transplantation (GETH) awards Dr. Enric Carreras the prize for the best clinical publication on bone marrow and hematopoietic transplants published in 2015
The annual meeting of GETH was held in Malaga on 10 and 11 March and was attended by everyone involved in hematopoietic transplants in Spain. At this year's meeting there were 150 doctors and 120 nurses. There were also courses for data managers and for the Joint Accreditation Committee of the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) and the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT), or JACIE, (the international standards and accreditation body focused on bone marrow transplantation).
Dr. Carreras was awarded the prize for the best clinical publication on bone marrow and hematopoietic transplantspublished in 2015. The prize was for an article he had published in the British Journal of Haematology in which he surveyed all the most recent findings concerning one of the most feared complications with such transplants, veno-occlusive disease (VOD). In his article Dr. Carreras, who is a renowned international expert on the subject, described his own personal recommendations about how such patients should be treated.
The studies currently underway are assessed during the working meetings that take place during the GETH annual meeting and new studies are proposed by each of the working groups, which are devoted to different procedural aspects. The REDMO Report is always distributed amongst those present and this year the Report for 2015 was part of the general information provided to the groups taking part.

“Today I'm cycling for you”
Alex is one of our supporters and has become an UNSTOPPABLE! And never was that better said of anyone because he managed to cycle indoor for 12 hours non-stop! It was all in homage to his friend José Antonio who has overcome leukaemia and Alex has dedicated this initiative to him. He was very encouraged and felt very special on account of all the support he received from the people of Torrelló from 9 o'clock in the morning until 9 o'clock in the evening. Through the Migranodearena ("My grain of sand") platform he managed to raise €800 which he has donated to our Foundation!
Guadalupe Burgos Memorial Badminton Tournament
The under-15 and under-19s Màster Nacional Badminton tournament was held in Granollers in memory of Guadalupe Burgos, who loved this sport with a passion but who, very sadly, did not succeed in her battle against leukaemia. Under-11, under-13 and under-17s competitions were held simultaneously and these fund-raising events raised €1,100 which will go towards our fight against leukaemia and other malignant blood diseases.
Forward with strength!
Pepa, a leukaemia patient, has managed to mobilise the entire town of Aracena in Huelva by organising a whole series of activities, (sales of biscuits and sweets, organising courses, moneybox collections, etc.) Her efforts have inspired a lot of people in the town and together they have created #fuerteypalante (forward with strength) and have raised €2,000!
