Abril is 10 years old and at the beginning of 2007, she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. She lives with her parents and brother in Peru but, together with her mother Esther, she travelled to Barcelona when she required a bone marrow transplant.

After waiting for several months, she underwent an umbilical cord blood transplant in November 2007 in the Hospital Vall d'Hebron, Barcelona, from an English donor. Nowadays, after recovering, she is once again in Peru with her family.

Her stay in Spain has left her with several diverse feelings. In addition to going to college (and receiving good grades), Abril has started ballet and flamenco classes.
