Leslie, paciente de leucemia aguda

Patient Leslie

In February 2009 Leslie was diagnosed with Acute Leukaemia. Her mother, Blanca, explains that Leslie would come back from college full of bruises but she felt fine. Finally, they decided to take her to the doctor and the results meant that she was sent directly to the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona. "I never thought that it would be Leukaemia. The truth is, I didn't know what it was", explains Blanca.

After almost 4 months in hospital, she is now receiving chemotherapy in the day clinic. Even though she has been through 4 sessions of chemo, Leslie is on top form. She loves music and dance. Her favourite acts are The Jonas brothers, Hannah Montana, Las Divinas, Chenoa...

Leslie i Chenoa

Leslie met one of her favourite singers, Chenoa

Although Leslie has lots of strength, the family situation is complicated. Her father, Jaime, has a rare disease (Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis) and when she began her treatment, they had to leave their home. Thanks to hospital social workers, they are now in a new residence and moving forward. "To see Leslie content is what makes me smile every day", says Jaime.

Leslie wants to be a vet for dogs, a fashion designer and a singer. She is a good and eager child. She tells us that at her school "everyone is her best friend". The first day that she returned to school after her treatment she received cheers and applause. "They made me a book for my birthday when I was in hospital", says Leslie proudly.

What is the best and worst thing about hospital? She knows exactly: "the worst is the food and the injections and the best, the clowns".
