Luis paciente leucemia 2

Hello, my name is Luis Montemayor Torres. A little more than a year ago, I woke up with a terrible headache. I went to the emergency room and thought that they would give me some kind of shot and I'd be heading right back home, but it didn't go as I expected. Right when they were about to discharge me, the doctor called and told me that there was something wrong. He began to ask me a series of questions which will probably sound familiar to a lot of patients: Have you been feeling tired lately? Have you been sweating a lot? Yes, I had most of the symptoms. It was then when the doctor told me that it wasn't sure but I probably had leukaemia and I had to remain in the hospital a few days, which later turned out to be a month.

It was the worst news I have ever gotten for, in fact, I had Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia, I knew nothing about the illness and hundreds of thoughts crossed my mind, mainly, if I would leave my wife and children alone. The sadness started to conquer my family and me, little by little. Quickly I began the treatment with Hydroxyurea and Allopurinol to decrease the excess of leukocytes and, two months later, I began taking Imatinib. To this day I have been taking it. It has been almost 11 months and I am in remission, living a normal life, except those days when I wake up specially tired or when the drugs make me feel a little dizzy but, a part from that, I feel fine. I consider myself a very fortunate man for, a year after my diagnosis I am feeling great and, even more, for having my wife and children who I love and, of course, my friends and all of those people who prayed for me.

My plan is to continue with the treatment until the day I am completely cured from CML because I think that, very soon, they will find a cure to these terrible illnesses. Meanwhile, I live and enjoy day by day with a huge desire to live next to my beloved ones.

Thanks to those beautiful people who have been beside me throughout these years for it hasn't been an easy path, it has been full of obstacles but with your help it has been much easier to walk through it. Thank you as well to the José Carreras Foundation for, from the start of my illness, my wife showed me their web page and, since then, I know much more about Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia and it gave me a lot of energy to keep going.

Lastly, I want to point out that, although CML is a very serious illness, it has made me value life in a different way, every second that passes I live it differently, with more courage! Daily, without them realizing, I wake up a few minutes earlier or in the middle of the night and I admire my treasure, my wife Mayra and my children Azael and Frida Sofia, and I enjoy it in an exceptional way.

Thank you family, doctors and friends. Thank you José Carreras Foundation.
